The Algorithmic Sweatshirt — This cosy hoodie is made by an algorithm. Etter Studio produced it as part of the identity for the Museum of Digital Art.
The video explaining the process of the sweatshirt's creation was also shot at the MuDA.
We worked together with one of Switzerland's last industrial knitting mill to produce a sweatshirt for the non-profit MuDA, as part of the staff uniform, as well as a way to support their budget.

It is made from 100% organic cotton and the entire production is fairtrade certified. Its design is created by an algorithm written in Processing. It receives a tiny data package defined by a hand-full of zeros (black) and ones (white). It then starts to repeat this input over and over in order to generate a pattern.

Unfortunately, every now and then, it does not clone the data correctly. As it carries out the new cycle it matches the output with the previous cycle and realises the mistake and tries to correct it on the next cycle, not always successfully, also because by then the previous (incorrect) cycle has become the new reference. A mutation creating a beautifully complex pattern as result.
