It wasn’t clear at all if it ever will become more than that. After the Golden Globe success of their hit show Mad Men, the American cable television channel AMC ventured out to create a new series titled Breaking Bad. They produced a beautiful pilot for the series directed by Vince Gilligan (The X-Files), starring Bryan Cranston in the lead role.
So far so good. The problem was just that AMC was naturally regarded as a family channel while Breaking Bad revolves around a meth cooking high-school teacher. Therefore AMC didn’t want to advertise this pilot widely — however, they needed the required viewer quota to get the series rolling.
